Kelsey J. Barry from Hinsdale South High School and Abdeljami M. Tefridj from Hinsdale Central High School have been named semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship Corp. 2013 National Achievement Scholarship Program.

More than 1,600 black American high school seniors were designated Semifinalists Wednesday and will continue in the competition for about 800 scholarship awards worth more than $2.5 million that will be offered next spring. Semifinalists must present a record of high academic performance throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay, and earn high SAT scores.
