Monday’s Child offers wares for kids

LA GRANGE – Rebekah Knight said moving her store, Monday’s Child Boutique, from Pennsylvania to La Grange was not a popular decision.
Knight is the third owner of the store and operated the boutique for 17 years out of Sewickley, Penn., before moving it to La Grange in 2010. Knight’s daughter and twin granddaughters live in the area, and she wanted to be closer to them.
“I had lived in the western suburbs for a long time and always wanted to move back,” Knight said. “It was not a popular decision among my customers in Pennsylvania because the store had been in the community for over 40 years. It was pretty iconic and well-established there.”
Local customers give Monday’s Child rave reviews who are happy Knight made the move.
“One day, I was walking by and saw the window display and I thought it was so cute. I thought, that reminds me of my granddaughter,” said Brookfield resident Delores Reeves. “I’ve been a customer there pretty much since the store opened.”
La Grange resident, Joan O’Halloran echoed these sentiments.
“It really is a lovely shop and Rebekah is so nice to work with,” O’Halloran said. “I recently bought several gifts for my grandchildren there.”
The store offers a range of unique and high-quality children’s clothing and accessories, and the store is stocked with everything from everyday wear to outerwear to toys and games.
“The flavor of my store is somewhat on the traditional side, but with some whimsy. My things are not so traditional that there’s no fun in them,” Knight said.
Knight gets merchandise from several different children’s-ware market shows. These have been as far away as Atlanta or New York City, or as nearby as the Merchandise Mart in Chicago.
“I absolutely don’t buy anything on the Internet,” Knight said.
“All the clothes are almost like one-of-a-kind items — you’re not going to see a lot of people wearing it,” Reeves said.
Monday’s Child also hosts weekend-long trunk shows for communion clothing. Knight plans to do another show in January or February 2013.
“I work with a few different companies that specialize in communion clothes, and they send multiple dresses in different sizes. There’s usually a seamstress on-site to help with measurements,” Knight said.
“It’s always really fun to see moms and daughters picking out the outfits together,” Knight said.
