District 180 schools fall short of AYP goal

BURR RIDGE — Burr Ridge Elementary District 180’s 2012 state report card is not something officials are boasting about.
“Our scores last year met neither our standards nor the state’s,” Superintendent Tom Schneider wrote in a letter sent home to parents of children at Burr Ridge Middle School and Anne M. Jeans Elementary School.
Both schools, as well as the district as a whole, failed to meet standards on the 2012 Illinois School Report Card.
Eighty-five percent of students needed to meet or exceed minimum standards in reading and mathematics, as measured by the Illinois Standard Achievement Test, in order to satisfy No Child Left Behind standards in 2012.
Just 68.9 percent of Burr Ridge Middle School students met or exceeded reading standards and 81.9 percent met or exceeded standards in math. While that is 1.4 percent higher than last year’s math results, it still falls below the AYP standard.
At Anne M. Jeans, overall test scores in math dropped 0.5 from 84.0 meeting or exceeding standards to 83.5 and reading rose from 67.2 to 71.6.
“The district is disappointed in our scores and is addressing these issues with a focused curriculum and research-based instructional methods at both the elementary and middle school,” Schneider told parents in his letter.
But he also told parents that the school cannot do it alone. He called on them to help their students, too.
“Get involved in your child’s education by attending parent-teacher conferences and other functions at school,” he wrote. “Kids do better when they know someone cares and is involved.”~.
