Hinsdale unincorporated area wants to join District 181

HINSDALE — Some residents of an unincorporated area near Hinsdale are interested in annexing into Hinsdale-Clarendon Hills Elementary District 181.

Golfview Hills is an area with 300 homes that is located south of 55th Street, between Illinois 83 and Madison Street. Residents there are served by Maercker Elementary District 60 as are those living in Colonial Gardens Apartments at 55th and Madison Streets.

“The geography never made sense,” said Christine Justema, one of the Golfview Hills resident who is interested in the change in school districts. “I think it’s a combination of people feeling that we should be in District 181 because of where we’re located and that it’s a better school district.”

Justema said 16 Golfview Hills families send 31 children to private schools, mostly because they aren’t happy with District 60.

Anne Cahill of Golfview Hills said no final decision about pursuing a detachment from District 60 and annexation into District 181 has been made.

“We know the process is very involved, takes a lot of time and can be expensive, but we’re looking into it because we’re interested,” she said.

To pursue a move in school districts, Cahill said two-thirds of the registered voters would need to sign a petition that would be submitted to the DuPage Regional Office of Education. The Regional Board of School Trustees hears requests for detachments and annexations in DuPage County.

That process often takes at a couple of years and can be expensive because of legal bills. School districts from which people want to detach often oppose the move to the Regional Board of School Trustees.

“We know there are a couple of areas in Oak Brook trying to annex into the Butler District (53); we’re keeping a close eye on that,” Cahill said.
