Freshman King announces his arrival at Hinsdale South

Freshman Joshua King has made a bigger impact on the wrestling mat than on the football field this year.
But there is little doubt that young Hinsdale South standout’s biggest impact will come on the gridiron someday. Some college football recruiting websites have already listed King among the Chicago area’s top propsects in the Class of 2016, although he didn’t get to play for the Hornets last season. King transferred from Proviso East late in the football season and IHSA bylaws do not allow athletes to play for two different teams during the season.
In wrestling, the 6-foot-2 King qualified for the Class 3A sectional by winning the 220-pound bracket at the Hinsdale Central Regional. Another promising football player, freshman Matt Allen of Central, and King were the only freshmen competing at 220 at the regional.
“It feels good,” King said. “When I started, I would never think that I would be able to make it (to the sectional).”
“It’s a great accomplishment, especially at that weight class,” said Hinsdale South coach Mike Mattozzi, who is retiring at the end of the season. “To have a freshman at 220 (is impressive). To have a freshman at any level of the varsity, you’ve got to be really talented.”
King (29-5) and junior teammate Justin Maslow (145) both won regional titles. Maslow will attempt to reach the Class 3A state meet for a second consecutive year.
The Hornets have been assigned to the Shepard Sectional, which begins Friday. The sectional features four teams ranked in the Season Pass Top Ten: No. 3 Sandburg, No. 4 Marmion, No. 5 Marist and No. 9 St. Rita.
No. 1 Marmion freshman Lucas Warren and the next three ranked 220 wrestlers, according to IllinoisMatmen.com, all will be at the Shepard Sectional. Only the top three wrestlers in each weight advance downstate, Feb. 15-16 in Champaign.
King defeated Morton junior Kevion Anderson 3-2 to win the regional, while Allen placed third.
Maslow defeated Lyons’ Jack Bates 6-2 in his regional final. Maslow is ranked No. 9 in Class 3A. Others at 145 at Shepard include No. 1 Bryce Brill of Mount Carmel and No. 7 Alante Walker of Sandburg.
Sanders continues summer success
In just his first varsity season, Jarvis Sanders keeps accomplishing one goal after another.
The 132-pound Lyons junior won the Class 3A Hinsdale Central Regional Saturday to advance to the Shepard Sectional starting Friday. Sanders (23-9) cruised to a 9-1 win over Hinsdale South’s Marc Kosiek (17-8) in the final.
Sanders’ next feat is to advance to the state meet Feb. 14-16, but that will be a much bigger accomplishment in one of the most difficult sectionals in the state. Shepard has four teams ranked in the Season Pass Top Ten: No. 3 Sandburg, No. 4 Marmion, No. 5 Marist and No. 9 St. Rita.
At 132, Marmion senior George Fisher is ranked No. 1 by IllinoisMatmen.com. Other top wrestlers at 132 include No. 8-ranked Mario Leveille of Marist and Brother Rice’s Paul Balich. The top three wrestlers in each bracket advance to state in Champaign.
“I feel pretty good,” Sanders said. “Coach (Griffin Powell) kept telling me that I could do it. He was telling me, ‘I’m one of the best in the state. You can get it done.’ ”
Sanders has attributed his success to his offseason work with the La Grange-based Beebe Trained club. The team is run by former Montini state champion Conor Beebe and his brothers, Carson and Chase. The Beebe brothers not only taught Sanders about technique and conditioning, but something else he has become much more vigilant about this season — his diet.
His semifinal opponent, Morton’s Juan Blanco, also trains with the Beebes and Sanders has competed against him in the Beebe Trained room.
“It’s always a close scrap,” said Sanders, who beat Blanco 6-3 Saturday.
In the summer, Sanders represented Beebe Trained at the USA Junior Nationals in Fargo, N.D.
Lyons teammate Eric Rende also captured a regional championship. Rende defeated Cosmo Halwix of Argo 13-4 to win at 182.
Lyons’ regional runners-up were Jack Bates at 145 and A.J. Villareal at 152. Third-place finishers were Mac Casella at 113 and Justin Fuller at 195.
