Helping Hand Center in Countryside is known for helping people with developmental disabilities achieve a reasonable level of independence and give back to their community. In that spirit, they recently formed the Kiwanis Aktion Club, made up of adults with developmental disabilities who enjoy volunteering in the community.
This winter the club decided to reach out to another local organization that helps people in need. They chose Sharing Connections, a Downers Grove-based non-profit that provides furniture and household items to low-income families helping them transform a bare apartment or house into a home.
The Kiwanis Aktion Club assembled welcome home baskets filled with cleaning supplies, transported them to Downers Grove, and then helped distribute the baskets.
Club members also volunteer at Sharing Connections once a month by sorting, cleaning and organizing donations.
