Hinsdale High School District 86 is preparing to go out to bid for its 2014 capital projects.

The School Board agreed on an estimated $233,600 worth of work to be done in the first phase of construction, plus the installation of solar panels at both schools.

The district has received grants and donations from the community to pay for the solar panel project, estimated to cost about $100,000.

Some of the other recommended improvements include upgrading the fire alarm panels at both Hinsdale Central and Hinsdale South for about $45,000 per school, replacing old counter tops and cabinets in the Family and Consumer Science room at South for $8,000, and replacing window blinds in 10 rooms at South for an estimated $7,140.

At Central, the district plans to resurface the tennis courts for about $40,000 and renovate an art department classroom used for jewelry making to improve safety and instruction, estimated to cost $80,000.

The School Board also identified eight projects for which it wants the staff to refine the budget and scope.

They include, at South, improving the lighting and controls in some hallways and stairwells, putting in a new concession stand for the gymnasium and replacing scoreboards.

At Central, the possible work includes relocating the building and grounds offices and loading dock to improve that department’s efficiency and to free up space for classrooms, making the baseball field handicap-accessible and upgrading the girls softball field.

Other projects to be evaluated further are adding more washrooms to the gym area at both schools.

The School Board voted 6-0, with Michael Kuhn abstaining, to proceed with the next step for each phase.

The list is not complete as administrators research other projects which would fit within the district’s $1.5 million budget for capital improvements this year.
