Girls bowling: Leyden Sectional Notebook featuring Hinsdale Central, South

DeJong making strides at Hinsdale Central

Hinsdale Central junior Kelly DeJong decided to stop playing soccer after her freshman season.

She was looking for another sport as a sophomore, and while sitting in class she heard an announcement for the girls bowling team. Her only experience was bowling with friends on bumper lanes, but she decided to give it a try.

A little more than a year later, DeJong was the team’s top finisher at the Leyden Sectional, rolling 1,131. That beat her previous best score by 21 pins.

Hinsdale South’s Hassell finishes career

Hinsdale South senior Kiaira Hassell put a wrap on her high school career by finishing 30th in the Leyden Sectional with 1,092 pins.

“It was tough competition [Saturday], but it was worth it,” Hassell said. “I enjoyed it and learned new things. I learned how to adjust.”

Hassell has been bowling since she was 5 and has always loved the sport. She’s made great strides in high school. As a freshman she averaged around 135, but she finished her senior year with a 182 average.
