Nursing a three-point lead midway through the fourth quarter, Proviso East’s strategy backfired in the West Suburban crossover Wednesday night against Hinsdale Central.

In a rematch between West Suburban division champions, Silver champ Hinsdale Central avenged last year’s loss with a 63-60 victory at Proviso East. Senior guard Chase Hamilton led the Red Devils with 18 points, while 6-foot-7 junior Matt Rafferty (12 points, seven rebounds) put Hinsdale ahead for good with a layup with1:17 to go.

Rafferty made two more free throws with 18 seconds left as the Devils outscored Proviso 11-4 in the fourth quarter. The Pirates (21-6), the only team to appear in all three games between division champions, beat the Red Devils 66-59 last season.

“This was great after we left with a bad taste from last year,” Hamilton said. “It was  a close game, but we pulled it out, and of all things it was on their home floor.”
