Lyons swimming coach Scott Walker has known Weston Credit for a long time. Walker coached Credit in the early stages of the sophomore’s swimming career with the Lyons Swim Club and had high expectations ever since.
“I’ve known him since he was 9 or 10 years old, so he’s no foreigner to me,” Walker said. “He’s definitely got a lot of talent in his blood. Both his dad and his mom were swimmers. He’s pretty educated and he grows more every season. The sky is the limit for him.”
After joining the Lions’ sectional lineup as a freshman, Credit collected his first ticket to state Friday and Saturday at Evanston. At the Downers Grove North Sectional on Saturday, he took first in the 100-yard breaststroke (59.29 seconds), dropping 2.92 seconds off his season-best time, and teamed with Jack Garrow, Adam Kline and Matt Linden to place third in the 200 medley relay with a state-qualifying time of 1:38.27.
“It’s very surprising,” Credit said. “I didn’t expect to be under a minute. Breaking the minute barrier is huge for me. I never thought I’d be making state sophomore year. I’m really pumped.”
