Chicago Botanic Garden’s ‘Escape to Paradise’ welcomes hundreds for Orchid Show

On Feb. 14, over 350 people came in from the cold to “Escape to Paradise,” a preview event for the Orchid Show.

The Hawaiian Islands provided leis and a welcoming aloha to guests upon entry into the warm floral oasis, which featured 10,000 sensational orchids in floor-to-ceiling displays of colorful, fragrant blooms. Aloha Lives! played and hula dancers entertained while guests sipped a “paradise cocktail” and savored Hawaiian-inspired hors d’oeuvres.

Williams Ski & Patio donated lounge furniture to add to the resort atmosphere. “Escape to Paradise” was co-chaired by Carolyn Katz and Lorill Haynes of the Woman’s Board of the Chicago Horticultural Society and generously supported by the Hawaiian Islands.

Additional support provided by Beam, Bonterra Organic Vineyards, Lagunitas Brewing Company, and Vosges Haut-Chocolat. Proceeds go toward the Woman’s Board of the Chicago Horticultural Society’s $1 million pledge to the Chicago Botanic Garden. The pledge, “Growing the Future,” is currently in its third year.

The Orchid Show is the Chicago Botanic Garden’s first month-long exhibition celebrating one of the world’s largest and most diverse flowering plant families.

The Orchid Show will be held daily 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (with exceptions), through March 16. Guests learn how orchids have adapted to life on six continents and explore the cultural and historic connections between people and orchids. The Garden’s Greenhouses and Galleries and exhibition halls of Regenstein Center will be filled with brightly colored orchids cascading from archways, climbing up columns and luring you close to the branches of orchid “trees.” Visit chicagobotanic.org/orchid for more information on tickets.
