Online purchase of $40,000 car stalls in Burr Ridge

The following incidents were listed among the official reports of the area police departments.

BURR RIDGE

BURGLARY

A security camera recorded two people breaking into three donation boxes and the gift shop at St. Mark Coptic Orthodox Church, 15W455 79th Street, at about 4:30 p.m. March 9. Nothing was reported missing.

DECEPTIVE PRACTICE

A resident reported he sent a wire transfer for $40,500 to pay for a 2010 Lexus he bought online from Louisiana. The car was supposed to be delivered March 6, but had not arrived by March 10. The seller had withdrawn the money and the resident could not reach him.

Chase Bank notified a resident March 5 that someone tried to use her Chase account to pay for a $3,200 purchase in Bangladesh. Chase stopped the transaction, so the woman lost no money.

Residents on March 4 and March 6 reported receiving calls from people claiming to be from the Internal Revenue Service who wanted them to pay money they owed. The residents recognized the calls as scams and sent no money.

WILLOWBROOK

THEFT

Twenty aluminum park benches were reported stolen from a park on the 200 block of Midway Drive at about 10:20 a.m. March 3. Replacing the benches is estimated to cost $20,000.

A catalytic converter was reported stolen from a vehicle parked on the 500 block of Willowbrook Centre Parkway at 9:10 a.m. March 4.
