June 6 is the last day for student attendance in Hinsdale-Clarendon Hills Elementary District 181 in a calendar approved March 24 by the School Board.

The calendar leaves June 6 as the final day of student attendance, provided no additional days are missed. That final day for students is the same last day for students approved March 17 for Hinsdale High School District 86.

All area school districts had to adjust their school calendars to make up for four days on which school was canceled because of extremely cold temperatures. Schools were closed Jan. 6 and 7 and Jan. 27 and 28 because of sub-zero temperatures.

District 181 made up one of its days Feb. 18, which originally was planned as an institute day with no students in attendance.

Additional calendar changes have both Friday, May 16, and Monday, June 2, as attendance days for all students. June 5 and 6 will be half days for students. The afternoons of both days, a Thursday and a Friday, will have staff staying for a teacher in-service and a school improvement day, respectively. June 9 and 10 also will be institute days for staff.

District 181 has an additional consideration because students at Hinsdale Middle School missed three days of school in January due to mold issues in the building.

HMS students made up one missed day on President’s Day, Feb. 17; another makeup day is scheduled for Good Friday, April 18. The board waived a third makeup day, as permitted by Illinois School Code.

“Your biggest push here was so that the students didn’t extend into the week of June 9,” said Kevin Russell, assistant superintendent of learning.
