Courtney Urzen, Class of 2015 | Nazareth Academy

Junior Courtney Urzen, from Westchester, has chosen to embrace all four pillars of the Nazareth experience, staying busy with an honors and AP class load, sports, the spring musical and service. The Nazareth Unity Scholar is co-president of the Math Club and member of Youth Initiative, Roadrunner Club, Tech Club, Astronomy Club and a leader of Snowball. She sings with Progressions Choir, will be seen in next weekend’s musical “Shrek,” and still finds time to play varsity lacrosse. Urzen was the recipient of Tom Dart’s Sheriff’s Youth Service Medal of Honor Award and the Vicariate IV Youth Service Award. Amazingly, she also works 12-15 hours per week for the Congregation of St. Joseph in La Grange and serves on the executive committee for Divine Providence Youth Ministry.

“I have had the opportunity to work closely with Courtney as a 2014 Snowball leader and an active member in Roadrunner Club where she is always doing more than expected. At Snowball, she facilitated workshops and truly led by example. She is currently taking two science courses (AP Chemistry and Honors Biology) as a junior so that she gains the knowledge needed for her desired profession of veterinarian,” says her college counselor, Melissa Byram.

Q. What are your post-high school plans?

A. I don’t have all the answers yet. I know I want to go to college and focus on math, science or engineering. So far I’m leaning toward St. Mary’s of Notre Dame or Valparaiso University.

Q. What do you like to do on the weekends?

A. Since I work for the Sisters of St. Joseph, and am involved in so many activities Nazareth offers, I don’t have much free time after homework. I love to ice skate, hang out with my friends and read.

Q. What is your favorite class or favorite subject? Favorite teacher?

A. Algebra II/Trigonometry was my favorite class. Ms. Bell is my favorite teacher at Nazareth because I learned so much from her and she encouraged my love for math.

Q. What is one thing someone wouldn’t expect to know about you?

A. I love ice skating and have taken lessons since I was four years-old. I am also tongue tied so I am unable to stick my tongue out very far.

Q. What is your favorite thing about Nazareth Academy?

A. I love that Nazareth offers something for everyone. I found it super easy to find a close group of friends that share my interests and values. I love the sense of community I have felt since I was a freshman. It’s my home away from home.

Q. What is your favorite sports team?

A. Other than the Nazareth Varsity Lacrosse team, I’m a loyal Cubs fan and I’m sure this will be the year.

Q. What is the one website you that you must visit every day?

A. I love Tumblr.

Q. What is your favorite TV show?

A. Definitely “The Big Bang Theory” or “Doctor Who.”
