At the recent Olympic Development Program Regional Championships, OPRF water polo players Jordin Hale and Katie Appell and Fenwick’s Danny Farmer were selected from the Midwest Zone to attend the USA Water Polo National Team Selection Camp in California over Memorial Day weekend.
Hale and Appell’s Midwest team, coached by Gwendolyn Brooks Middle School teacher and Lyon’s Township boys’ coach Doug Eichstadt, finished in first place at the regional tournament, which took place in Salt Lake City from March 21 through 23. Farmer’s team competed in Texas from March 28 through 30 and finished in fourth place.
After the selection camp, approximately 30 players will be chosen for the Men’s and Women’s Youth National Team. Those athletes will then attend the Pipeline National Training Camp in late June or early July and may go on to compete in international tournaments.
Next year, senior Katie Appell will be playing water polo at Mercyhurst University in Erie, Pennsylvania. Jordin and Danny are juniors and will continue to play for their respective high school teams. Fenwick’s boys’ team is currently ranked second in the state of Illinois and the Oak Park River Forest girls’ team is ranked twelfth.
All athletes selected to the selection camp are required to raise money and encouraged to set up a website through USA Water Polo to solicit donations. Anyone interested in donating towards these players’ fundraising requirement may do so by going to their websites:
