3 area students earn National Merit Scholarships

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation awarded area students achievement scholarships as part of 800 black American high school seniors receiving the funds.

The National Achievement Scholarship Program is a privately financed academic competition established in 1964 specifically to honor scholastically talented black American youth and to provide scholarships to a substantial number of the most outstanding participants in each annual competition.

Area recipients who received a $2,500 scholarship are Julian T. Kanagy of Oak Brook from Hinsdale Central High School, who plans a career in law; Ana A Vasan of Western Springs from Lyons Township High School who plans a neuroscience career; and Ciara M. Wardlow of Willowbrook, a student at the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy in Aurora, who plans a film production career.
