THE SKINNY

No. 7 Downers Grove South (12-4) won in straight sets over Hinsdale South 25-14, 25-16 in a West Suburban Gold match in Downers Grove. The Hornets fought hard to an 11-11 tie in the first game before the Mustangs’ skill and power took over to rule the day.

TURNING POINT

With Game 1 tied 11-11, Downers South’s Tyler Zowaski served for five consecutive points that included kills from the Mustangs’ Will Tischler and Tyler Kaczmarek. A kill from the Hornets’ David Carli cut the Mustangs’ lead to 16-12, but host Downers never allowed Hinsdale to get any closer in the 25-14 win.

THE STAR

“Craig Belluomini stepped up and did a real nice job today,” Mustangs coach Kurt Steuer said. “He’s our DS and he did a nice job defensively and passing the ball.” Belluomini finished with five digs for the match.
