Girls soccer: Lyons beats Libertyville on penalty kicks, 1-0

THE SKINNY

One hundred minutes were not enough to decide a winner in the Pepsi Showdown match between Lyons and Libertyville in Western Springs. Neither team scored in regulation or the two 10-minute overtime periods but the Lions dominated the penalty kick portion 3-0 to get the win.

TURNING POINT

Lyons (7-0) scored on three of its four penalty kick tries with Catherine King, Sarah Drew and Erin Fitzgerald all beating Libertyville goalie Laura Janousek. Libertyville (2-3-1) was blanked on each of its three attempts.

THE STAR

Lions’ junior goalie Lidia Breen didn’t want to take any credit for the win but she did make three crucial stops in penalty kicks, knocking down shots by Sydney Mudd, Emily Blackwell and Mia Hollingsworth. She also had seven total saves in regulation and overtime.
