Fenwick sophomore Patrick Kenny was groomed to be a great defensive volleyball player and an immaculate passer.

Kenny has three sisters who came through the Fenwick volleyball program, and defense and setting were their specialties. Carly (21) was a libero, Mary Grace (19) a setter and Bridget (17), who is on track to graduate this spring, a libero.

“They all played volleyball throughout grade school and they’re the reason I started to play, whether it was taking me into the back yard and playing with me or encouraging me to sign up,” Patrick Kenny said. “For the most part we did just practice passing. We didn’t have as much of an opportunity to practice hitting. So passing was a big part of my game.”

Patrick Kenny has one big advantage over his sisters: height. None of the three girls were taller than 5-foot-7 and Patrick is already 6-feet and still growing. For that reason, he’s venturing into uncharted water for the Kenny family; he’s becoming a hitter.

“I’ve probably grown at least two inches in the last year, and now I’m transferring to hitting,” said Patrick Kenny, who started on varsity last year as a libero. “I feel natural there. I played outside hitter some in grade school and I like it a lot better, so it’s a good transfer to make.”
