Prom time! Bring on the color and sparkle

This is a crazy time of year for high school seniors. Finalizing college plans, battling senior-itis and of course, making plans for prom. We’ve pulled together some of the best of the best to show you what you’ll be seeing on the dance floor. We’ve got the tuxes, flowers, dresses, makeup and hair. This season is all about color, elegance and a little fun!

For tuxes, I went straight to the experts at Hinsdale Clothiers. Steven L. Potter, president of the store, talked about the trends for tuxes this season. “Trimly fitting coats and trousers! The color choices for accessories are endless. Brightly colored vests with bowties are dominant.”

As for dresses, just about anything goes this season. You’ll see fun and flirty short party dresses, high to low hemlines, two-toned hues, beads, illusions, chiffon, cut-outs, sparkle, strapless and pastels. Most importantly, prom dresses should reflect individual style. Find one that brings out your personality!

Finally, the estimated cost of prom for 2014 is $978, and the average cost of a prom dress is $575, a hefty price. If you can’t afford a dress, check out the Glass Slipper Project, an organization that gives away free prom dresses and accessories to high school juniors and seniors in Chicago and the surrounding areas. Their goal is to make sure everyone can go to their high school prom. And high schoolers, please be safe!
