Baseball: Nazareth Academy splits doubleheader with St. Viator

St. Viator 6-3, Nazareth 3-4

THE SKINNY

Strong starting pitching helped St. Viator and Nazareth split Saturday’s East Suburban Catholic Conference doubleheader in LaGrange Park. St. Viator junior George Burny allowed three hits in 4 2/3 innings in the opener. Senior Jake Bartels (5-0) pitched six innings, allowing one run, to earn the Roadrunners’ win.

TURNING POINT

With St. Viator (15-5, 2-2) leading 6-3 in the opener, Nazareth (15-4, 3-1) scored two runs in the sixth inning and loaded the bases with two outs. Mike Pilet entered the game and induced a groundout to prevent further damage. In the second game, St. Viator scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh and had the bases loaded when Brandon Bossard entered and struck out the next two hitters to earn the save.

THE STAR

Not only did Bartels pitch a gem, striking out eight, he had six hits on the day. His biggest hit came in Game 2, when in the top of the seventh, he hit a homer for what proved to be an important insurance run.
