A Darien woman was the victim of a ruse burglary Thursday afternoon when a man arrived at her door and said he needed to check on the water.

The resident of the 1600 block of Holly told police about 2:45 p.m. the man rang the doorbell, saying there was a problem with the water and it might be contaminated. The elderly resident let him in and they went to the kitchen and then the basement, spending about 30 minutes. While distracted by the man, another person entered the unlocked home and stole jewelry from the bedroom, police said.

The man was described a white, in his late 20s to 30s, wearing sunglasses, gloves and an orange construction vest. The woman did not have a description of the second person, or a vehicle.

Darien police caution residents to not allow anybody into their home that has not been invited. If a person comes to the door unannounced and seeks to gain entry, they should close and lock the door and call 911.
