Get to know the community of Western Springs with our Children’s Theatre of Western Springs Spotlight feature.

This week, we meet Shane Burtker of Western Springs who joined up in 2003.

Q. Why did you join CTWS?

A. I had a huge amount of energy when I was really young, and I needed to focus it somewhere!

Q. What made you discover your interest in theater?

A. A few of my friends were doing it at the time and it looked fun to be on the stage.

Q. What is your favorite thing about theater?

A. It is so hard to pick one thing. I think the chance of being exposed to all sorts of plays and scripts. It can really give you an opportunity to expand your knowledge.

Q. At CTWS do you work on stage, behind the scenes, or both? Name some roles/crews that were your favorite.

A. I have done and enjoyed both. Most recently, I played Don John in “Much Ado About Nothing.” He is the villain of the show, so that is always more exciting to act out. I also had to play a dead body in the musical, “Lucky Stiff.” That was an experience.

Q. What is your favorite thing about CTWS?

A. The people that you meet! It is such a close and supportive environment and I am so thankful to have been a part of it.

Q. Do you see yourself continuing to act?

A. Maybe. I would love to do more, so I hope I am able to find somewhere to pursue it in college.

Q. What do you want to be when you grow up?

A. I honestly am not sure yet!

Q. What is your dream role?

A. I don’t really have one. I have had fun in every role I have ever played so I am happy to do just about anything!
