Softball: Fenwick’s Giselle Diaz switches infield positions to get on field

RIVER FOREST — To get on the field her freshman year, Fenwick’s Giselle Diaz had to move from her natural position of shortstop to second base, where she had never played before.

The switch is working out well. Diaz has emerged as a dependable fielder for a Fenwick team that beat Leyden 4-0 on Saturday to win the Class 4A Oak Park Regional title. The Friars advanced to face Oak Park-River Forest in the Trinity Sectional semifinals, scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. The winner takes on either Trinity or York in the finals set for 11 a.m. Saturday at Concordia.

Diaz has handled the defensive responsibilities of her new the position and adjusted to the hard-hit balls that routinely come to second.
