Girls soccer: Hinsdale South’s stifling ‘D’ not enough to stop Normal West

Hinsdale South’s defense was speedy and its goalkeeping impressive, but it wasn’t enough to stop Normal West on Friday.

The Hornets shut out the Wildcats’ high-octane offense for nearly 59 minutes in the Class 2A state semifinals at North Central College in Naperville before Abby Thompson volleyed home a cross from Kate Lorenz for her 25th goal of the season. Thompson’s strike with 21:02 left in the second half gave the Wildcats a 1-0 win.

“We’re so excited for tomorrow,” Thompson said. “Normal West has never won a state championship in any sport and we are so close to it. We just know we can do it.”
