It was Fenwick baseball team’s deepest playoff run in school history, but the accomplishment didn’t lessen the sting of a 2-1 loss to Grayslake Central Monday night in the Class 3A North Central Supersectional.

“Sometimes the ball doesn’t bounce your way,” junior catcher Justin Rodriguez said.  “This is probably one of the best seasons I’ve had at Fenwick. This was a historic event for Fenwick, that was special.”

The Friars (25-11) had their opportunities behind a solid outing by junior Kevin Forde, who gave up three hits, but walked four and hit a batter.  The offense, meanwhile, struggled to take advantage of the opportunities presented, stranding six while getting picked off twice and grounding into an inning-ending double play in the sixth with runners on first and second.

“I think some of our base running showed the nerves,” coach Dave Hogan said. “Most of the guys, that was the biggest game of their lives. Our base running lacked a little skill today because I think they were trying to make something happen instead of just taking a deep breath and relaxing.”
