Fenwick coach David Hogan was smiling a lot after games.  With a team batting average of .370 and a 10-game winning streak, his Friars mashed their way to their first Class 3A sectional championship Saturday at Glenbard South.

One of the big reasons during Fenwick’s stretch run has been junior left-handed hitter Michael Krecek, who had another big game in a 6-2 victory over Montini. Fenwick out-hit the Broncos 15-3. Krecek, a La Grange resident, went 3-for-3 and drove in the go-ahead run to give the Friars a 3-2 lead in the top of the fourth inning on his double over center fielder Rhett Wojkovich’s head.

Krecek’s blast on a 2-2 count scored Mike Neill from second base.

“I was thinking that he had actually caught it,” Krecek said. “I was thinking that the guy had it.”

With no outs, there was a good chance Neill would have scored later in the inning. But after Krecek’s double, Montini coach Bob Landi made a pitching change by pulling starter Eric Frontzak for his younger brother, Sean.

Only St. Rita has been able to shut out the slugging offense for the Friars (25-10), which play Grayslake Central in the North Central College Supersectional Monday. St. Rita won 11-0 on April 23.
