Brookfield Zoo announces birth of 2 bison calves

Two baby bison born this spring are now on display to the public at the Brookfield Zoo.

A male calf was born to 5-year-old Leotie on May 31, and a female was born to 5-year-old Lucy on June 6, according to a release from the Chicago Zoological Society. Ron, 14, sired both the calves.

The public can go see the calves on Saturdays and Sundays for the next few weeks while their outdoor habitat at Great Bear Wilderness undergoes routine maintenance, according to the release.

Once the maintenance is completed, the calves and the rest of the herd can be seen in their exhibit daily.

Bison calves are able to stand within half an hour of their birth, and can run after just a few hours, according to the zoo.
