Letter: Graduate speaks out against District 86 Board majority

I am a proud graduate of Hinsdale South High School. But my biggest fear for District 86 is that the School Board majority will make changes so devastating that future students won’t be proud to say the same.

Award-winning school districts like ours aren’t the result of luck or happenstance. We thrive because of the partnership of our teachers, administration, students and families.

When excellence is threatened, as it has been by this School Board, those who care take a stand. I can say beyond a shadow of a doubt that the teachers of District 86 care deeply for its students. They have shown they care when they stayed late into the night for extracurricular activities, spent their nights and weekends grading papers and tests, and kept in touch years after graduation.

All the majority of the School Board has shown they care about is saving a quick buck.

After talking to fellow classmates, I can state that we do not want a School Board that is so opaque after guaranteeing transparency. We do not want a School Board that chases out highly-regarded administrators, only to replace them with those who have a 100 percent disapproval rating. We do not want a School Board that makes irresponsible decisions such as a flat tax levy and eliminating experienced school nurses.

Please don’t let this board majority ruin the excellence of District 86. We deserve more than the poor-decision-making of this board. It is time we demand it.
