Weird animals a fun theme for vacation Bible school

Organizers selected a fun theme for the June 23-27 vacation bible school at Christian Church of Clarendon Hills.

With some large, fun caricature drawings posted on the walls of the church, 5750 Holmes Ave., the 2014 theme for the vacation Bible school is Weird Animals: Where Jesus’ Love is One of a Kind!

The vacation Bible school has been offered for about a dozen years and is a joint effort of Christian Church of Clarendon Hills and nearby Christ Lutheran Church of Clarendon Hills.

“The theme this year is all about how when you feel you’re weird, you’re really not,” said Missy Buche, children’s minister for Christian Church of Clarendon Hills. “Even weird animals have a purpose. We’re all different, and it’s OK to be different.”

Buche said 360 children, ages 4 through those going into sixth grade, registered for the this session of the vacation Bible school, which includes Bible-learning experiences using sight, hearing, touch and taste. Each of the five sessions runs from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and includes group discussions, science experiments, play activities, music, worship and snacks.

“I really like the songs we sing,” said Jackson Brown, 10, of Willowbrook, who is attending his third vacation Bible school at Christian Church of Clarendon Hills. “We have a lot of fun and learn new things. I think the weird animals is kind of cool because it’s something strange and different.”

Christine Kouria, 11, of Willowbrook, was glad to be back for her second consecutive year.

“The activities are really fun,” she said. “I liked it a lot last year and am having fun again now.”
