Five Seasons Burr Ridge celebrates Independence Day with “4th of July Extravaganza.” Read the release:
In the United States of America, July 4th is a special date on our collective calendar. At Five Seasons Family Sports Club in Burr Ridge, Independence Day’s distinctive flavor is amped up even more with an emerging family-friendly event dubbed The 4th of July Extravaganza.
With Aquatics Manager Robin Walker at the helm, the club this past week held its 2nd Annual Extravaganza featuring a variety of contests that took advantage of the club’s regionally renowned outdoor pool.
Among the goings-on were:
*A coin toss-and-retrieval contest, with children diving after pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters at incrementally more challenging pool depths,
*A greased watermelon contest, in which two teams, each with 25 children from 4 to 12 years old, vied to get the slippery, bulky object to their contingent’s designated pool edge,
*A chipping contest, wherein adults’ golf finesse is put to the test as they try to chip onto a portable green stabilized on the pool surface by a Five Seasons staffer, and
*A Style-and-Splash contest, with adults (mostly dads) performing a variety of cannonball and other jumps into the pool, under the watchful eye and subsequent votes of Five Seasons staff members.
It all culminated with The Regatta, a colorful contest that brings together families as they build pool-faring vessels made entirely of cardboard and duct tape. Each boat must carry two people, and participants surge forward with the aid of paddles, some also made of cardboard.
Last year, perhaps the most creative effort was a boat, christened The Bat Boat, which was designed like superhero Batman’s Batmobile. The 10 Regatta entrants this time around included one with a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle theme, skippered by a boy dressed in Ninja Turtle garb. Another, decorated like a watermelon box, was built by the club’s Kids’ Camp participants and transported a 1 ½-year-old from one side of the pool to the other.
“This is all a fun way to bring families to the pool,” says Walker. “We look forward to this growing as a tradition here at Five Seasons.”
