Cardboard and duct tape. That’s all participants can use to create their vessel for the inaugural Cardboard Boat Regatta, 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 9 at Lions Park Pool, 100 Byrd Ct., Clarendon Hills.
“It’s a great event for kids to be able to work in teams to build their boat,” said Laura Reinke, aquatics manager for Clarendon Hills Park District. “They need a group of up to five, with two captains to paddle the boat through the course. We’ll have a staff member or two in the water that they need to paddle around.”
The boats can be decorated but not with paint or any other hazardous materials. Washable markers, crayons and colored duct tape are acceptable.
The Most Creative Craft, the Fastest Vessel and the Titanic will all be awarded prizes. A continental breakfast will be served following the event.
There is a $20 fee per boat. The registration deadline is Friday, Aug. 1.
