After leaving the Chicagoland area and moving to New York, I notice whenever high school is brought up people constantly express their disdain for those four years.
It’s something I can’t relate to. For me, high school was really enjoyable because Hinsdale Central High School was a great place. The teachers who make up that place are to thank for that.
The classes I took my senior year were classes I loved, and one in particular helped me realize I wanted a career in writing. Five years later, I am writing for one of the most successful American fashion labels in history. If it wasn’t for this class and mainly my teacher, I don’t think I would have followed this path.
Not only did my teachers give me an education that was a foundation for college and my career, but they were gracious, giving role models. I was lucky to be a part of programs like Conflict Resolution Team and Breaking Down The Walls. These programs are important not just for making school a safe place, but to help students learn to be kind, tolerant and respectful, in and out of school. The fact that teachers dedicate their time to those programs on top of their regular workload speaks volumes of their character.
I’m lucky enough to call some of those teachers my friends today. These people deserve so much more than they ever get or ask for from the School Board. They don’t deserve to be treated this way.
