Looking stylish and staying comfortable on the Oak Brook polo fields

Oak Brook Polo is back in season! The second match of the season is set for this Sunday and the theme is Classic Car Day. There will even be a few Hollywood VIPs in attendance. Fashion-wise, it can be confusing knowing how to dress for an elegant event that is also a sporting event. Some women might take inspiration from English royalty like Princess Kate. Others might recall Julia Roberts in “Pretty Woman,” wearing the iconic polka-dotted chocolate brown dress and coordinating hat. Ah, the quintessential attire for attending a match.

Dressing for a polo match is actually very simple. Sundresses, maxi skirts or dresses, flouncy dresses and skirts are all perfect. I found a “Pretty Woman”-type dress at Vintage Charm in La Grange; it’s a short, sleeveless, navy and white polka-dot dress. Pair that with a natural and white wide brim hat, and you are good to go. Another alternative is a black and white maxi dress with a white and silver wide brim hat. Sporting a hat is the quintessential polo look. It makes you look stylish while offering protection from the sun.

Other dress options include a floral print short dress. Sweet William in Hinsdale carries an ideal one from Megan Park. It’s a flawless look for an afternoon at the matches and on trend for this summer. Or try a Lida Baday black printed dress that comes with a belt. It’s light and airy and ideal for this type of event.

One of the most important components of polo attire is the shoes. Why? Because of the traditional halftime activity of divot stomping. Attendees go out onto the field during halftime and stomp down the turf that has come up from the horses’ hooves. It’s fun and useful, but not if you’re wearing high heel stiletto shoes. You’ll also be doing lots of walking on grass and unpaved areas. Your best bet is to wear flats, flat sandals or wedges.

Additional matches will be held Aug. 17 (British Polo Day,) Aug. 24 (Family Day) and Sept. 14 (Argentina Day.) All matches are at 1 and 3:30 p.m. For more information, visit oakbrookpoloclub.com.
