This edition of Library Look brings us the La Grange Public Library’s Vicki Rakowski, Head of Youth Services.

Q. How long have you been with the library?

A. Seven months – the time has really flown by!

Q. What is your favorite part of your job at the library?

A. Getting to know the families and the kids who come into the department and finding the right books for them. It’s the one of the greatest feeling in the world getting just the right book for somebody.

Q. What is something library users may not know about you?

A. I am an internet-ordained minister – a friend asked me to perform her wedding ceremony, so I went online and got ordained. That’s something I wouldn’t have predicted ever doing!

Q. What do you think is an underused feature/service of the library, or what is your favorite feature/service?

A. Universal Class – it’s a really cool product that patrons can use their library cards to access online. It’s a self-directed online class database. You can take classes in everything from Gardening and Home Improvement to HTML Writing and Reiki Studies! It’s pretty cool: http://bit.ly/1l96RVN

Q. What is your favorite book and why?

A. My all-time favorite book for grown-ups is “Persuasion” by Jane Austen. It’s such an elegant book about second chances, and knowing and trusting yourself, even when it’s difficult to do that. My all-time favorite book for kids is “From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler” by E.L. Konigsburg. Mostly because it’s awesome.

Q. What author or character would you like to meet? Why?

A. I’d love to meet Jane Austen, mostly so I could tell her how much everybody loved her novels, and how much she means to so many people. I always felt like it was so sad that there was no way for her to know how much of an impact she had on the world.

Q. What are your hobbies?

A. Oh, I have a zillion of them – reading, writing, water-coloring, baking, cooking and collecting new hobbies.
