Ekta Mundada didn’t have to look far for proof the Kumon Math and Reading Center helps kids achieve their academic goals.
“My daughter does Kumon. I see how the program works,” said Mundada, who opened her own center in Burr Ridge several months ago.
An accountant who worked for many years in medical billing, Mundada was ready for a change, so after a year of training with the Kumon system, she opened Kumon of Burr Ridge in February.
Founded in 1954 in Osaka, Japan, Kumon is the world’s largest after-school math and reading academic enrichment program. Through its individualized curriculum, Kumon helps children in preschool through 12th grade to catch up, keep up or get ahead.
Denise Jison of Burr Ridge brings her 6-year-old son Charlie to Kumon every Monday and Thursday. She said it’s not just about building her son’s math skills. Jison said Kumon helps Charlie to learn study and work skills.
“He’s learning to work independently,” Jison said.
Children receive instruction on Monday and Thursdays at the Burr Ridge facility, located in County Line Square at County Line Road and Burr Ridge Parkway.
Every student begins the Kumon experience with a placement test, assuring each receives instruction at the appropriate level.
“We want them to start at a comfortable point,” Mundada said.
Students can receive instruction in one or both subjects, and can attend class once or twice weekly. In addition to the weekly instruction, Kumon of Burr Ridge’s instructors provide each child with work to continue progressing at home.
Charlie’s work at Kumon includes homework, which he performs at 2 p.m. each day.
“I have the alarm set,” Jison said. He hears the alarm and knows it is time to get to work.
“Kumon believes in making all kids independent learners,” Mundada said.
In the short time Charlie has attended Kumon, his mother said she has seen improvement. He’s gone from simple addition to double-digit subtraction.
Families pay $100 a month per subject. In June and July, the $50 registration fee is waived, Mundada said.
Summer instruction is a good way to ensure children not only won’t lose their skills over summer break, but will get a head start on the next school year.
