Gerard J. Abood, M.D., brings his expertise in gastrointestinal surgical oncology to Loyola University Health System. He also is an assistant professor in the Department of Surgery at Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine.
His medical interests include surgical oncology for the treatment of cancer in the esophagus, stomach, liver, pancreas, bile duct, small bowel and colon as well as laparoscopy and robot-assisted surgery for GI malignancy.
Abood is certified by the American Board of Surgery. He earned his medical degree from The Ohio State University College of Medicine and Public Health. He completed his residency in general surgery as well as a research fellowship in tumor biology at Loyola University Medical Center. He completed his fellowship training in surgical oncology at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center with a special focus in minimally invasive approaches to complex GI malignancy.
He is active in cancer research and design of novel clinical trials for GI cancer. He has had several articles published in scholarly journals and is a member of several professional organizations including the American Society of Clinical Oncology, Society of Surgical Oncology, Association of Academic Surgery, the American College of Surgeons and the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons.
