As local schools come back into session after the holidays, a unique educational services company is helping west suburban students succeed with less stress and more confidence. Aristotle Peer Tutors, formerly Peer2Peer Tutors, started operations in Western Springs, Hinsdale and La Grange this fall and has been building a network of peer tutors consisting of top performing and reliable local high school and college students.
The company uses proprietary technology that includes a recommendation engine for matching the right peer tutors with students. The company prides itself on the ability to create a unique fit between student and tutor.
“We take the time to explore the interests of both our students and tutors inside and outside the classroom,” said Erik Kimbel, founder of the peer tutors. “While it is understood that our peer tutors must indeed distinguish themselves academically, we believe that it is their personal interests and passions that help to make them inspirational role models to other kids.”
Aristotle Peers was founded in 2004 by high school junior Erik Kimel. Since then, the company has provided more than 100,000 hours of tutoring services to over 5,000 students throughout the country. The tutors have a minimum GPA of 3.8, and an average SAT score of 2100. Twenty-five percent of all tutors are national merit scholars. Eighty-five percent of all Aristotle Peer tutors were admitted to their top choice college.
In this area, they employ tutors from Lyons Township and Hinsdale Central high schools, as well as the University of Chicago and DePaul University.
Online tutoring through Skype and Google documents is another unique service provided by Aristotle Peers. Many of the tutors who were hired in high school are continuing on as online college tutors. For high school students seeking assistance or enrichment in advanced placement or honors classes, this is an excellent option.
Hilary Remijas, a Western Springs resident, is leading Aristotle Peers’ west suburban Chicago operations as its regional education adviser. Remijas was drawn to Aristotle Peers because of its highly customized matchmaking, pre-screening and vetting of its tutors, and the personalized and local attention and flexibility.
“I love it when the client calls and tells me how wonderful their child’s tutor is, and how much easier it makes their job as parents,” he said. “In many cases, the tutor may have even had the same teacher as the student, so they come to the job with a completely different, fresh, and informed perspective.”
