INDIAN HEAD PARK — An elderly resident reported she was conned out of $990.
The woman, who lives on the 100 block of Acacia, told Indian Head Park police someone claiming to work for Citibank called her Aug. 13, and said her account was past due. To remedy the situation, she was told to buy $990 worth of REloadIt cards, which is a prepaid card purchasing system. She bought the cards at the Jewel Food store in Countryside. The resident then read the numbers on the back of the card over the phone to the person who had called her about her account.
When the caller telephoned again asking for more money, the resident became suspicious and reported the situation. Police learned the money credited to the REloadit cards already had been used to buy gift cards, and the two telephone numbers from the unknown caller were disconnected.
