Loyola gains expert in cancer surgery

Carol Bier-Laning, M.D., will bring her expertise in the treatment of head and neck cancer and transoral robotic surgery to Loyola University Health System. She is an assistant professor in the Department of Otolaryngology at Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine.

Bier-Laning will be an integral part of a clinic at Loyola’s Cardinal Bernardin Cancer Center that offers treatment options to people diagnosed with head and neck cancer. This includes transoral robotic surgery, which is less invasive and can be used to remove benign and some malignant tumors in adults.

Pink 5K finances breast cancer fund

The Oak Brook Park District presented a check for $6,000 from the proceeds of the 2nd annual Pink 5K race to Adventist Hinsdale Hospital Foundation Open Arms Breast Cancer Fund.

The money raised will finance the hospital’s 40 Free Mammograms for 40 Women program in October. The park district originally pledged $2,500, but an outpouring of support from the community more than quadrupled registration numbers and allowed the park district to increase its donation. There was an additional $360 raised through individual donations from participants.
