Aging Care Connections, La Grange, offers gentle exercise classes for seniors who suffer from arthritis and would like to maintain flexibility. This six-week series teaches cancer survivors and their family members about mindfulness and how to practice it to achieve the full benefits. What is Wrong Right with You During Cancer? will be held from noon-1 p.m. Jan. 17. Based on Dr. Lawrence LeShan’s book Cancer as a Turning Point, learn how a cancer patient can harness his “inner self” and find a decisive turning point in the cancer journey.

Financial Concerns for Cancer Patients will take place from noon-1 p.m. Feb. 21. Receive answers to common financial questions concerning insurance, employment and benefits from an attorney with the Cancer Legal Resource Center.

Weight Management after Cancer will be held from noon-1 p.m. March 20. Managing a healthy weight after cancer doesn’t have to be a challenge. Attend this presentation to learn simple tips to improve diet, increase activity and reach weight management goals.

Medical experts will answer questions regarding leukemia, lymphoma, myelodysplastic syndromes, and multiple myeloma from patients and their families from 1-4 p.m., Jan. 29 at the Leukemia Research Foundation’s Annual Town Hall Meeting. The meeting will be held at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Feinberg Pavilion — Conference Room A, 251 E. Huron in Chicago. Attendees can learn the latest about their disease and pose questions to a panel of medical experts in the field of hematology/oncology. The panel includes Ima Garcia, a Leukemia Research Foundation 2011 Nurse of the Year who offers another perspective useful to caregivers attending the Town Hall meeting. Time to Thrive: Moving Forward After Cancer will be held from 6-8 p.m. Thursdays, Feb. 23 - March 29. Registration Required. Both educational and experiential, this six week series is for cancer survivors who have completed treatment. Each two-hour session begins with physical group exercise that is facilitated by a trained exercise specialist and tailored to each individuals’ needs. Weekly nutrition classes, survivorship care plans, group support, and discussion that focuses on the emotional aspects of survivorship, will be part of the experience. A light dinner is provided at each session and participants are given pedometers to help track physical activity. Attendance each week is encouraged for the full benefit of the program.

The DuPage County Health Department wants to remind residents that using an RxBOX to drop off unused medications is a safe and easy way to contribute to a better environment. The Health Department has partnered with 12 municipal and county law enforcement agencies in placing RxBOX collection boxes in police stations throughout the county. The materials are collected periodically from the RxBOX locations and safely incinerated by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency using state-of-the-art technology. Residents who are clearing out their medicine cabinets can dispose of their old medications at any of the following RxBOX locations: Burr Ridge Police Department, 7660 S. County Line Road No. 1, Burr Ridge and DuPage County Sheriff, 501 N. County Farm Road, Wheaton.

Healthy Steps

The Aging Well Community Action Teams of La Grange and LaGrange Park hold a monthly Walk for Health 10:30 a.m.-noon the third Wednesday of the month indoors at Park District of La Grange’s Recreational Center, 536 East Ave. The Walk for Health encourages people to exercise, especially by walking, to maintain a healthy lifestyle. This group offers mothers of children under age 6 the opportunity to grow and learn together. Group offers fellowship and presentations from parenting experts on a variety of topics. Illinois residents now have access to a free prescription assistance program. The Illinois Rx Card, which is free to all Illinois residents, provides discounts on medications with an average savings of around 30 percent. There are no restrictions to membership, no income requirements, no age limit and no applications to fill out. Illinoisans can obtain a free Rx card, search drug pricing, and locate participating pharmacies by visiting www.IllinoisRxCard.com. The DuPage Community Clinic and the DuPage County Health Department have opened the Southeast DuPage Health Initiative, whose mission is to connect low-income residents to a full range of health services. The Initiative is located at 422 N. Cass Ave., Westmont. The initiative will provide critical health services to about 1,000 people this year and hopes to increase that number to 4,000 in three years.

The DuPage County Health Department is encouraging individuals who are at a high risk for contracting HIV/AIDS to get tested and seek subsequent care and treatment if necessary. Through grants made available from the Illinois Public Health Association and the Illinois Department of Public Health, the Health Department offers free testing to those persons most at risk for HIV/AIDS, including intravenous drug users, high-risk heterosexuals and homosexual men. Individuals who do not meet the criteria to receive free testing can still be tested for a $50 fee at the Health Department’s STD Clinic, which also offers testing for other sexually transmitted diseases. Sexually transmitted diseases screenings, provided 2-7 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays, will include short, educational programs, followed by an opportunity for parents and students to socialize.
