CHICAGO — The Adler Planetarium’s Women’s Board hosted a preview party for the annual Celestial Ball on June 20 at Hermès of Paris, Chicago. This year’s Celestial Ball will be held Sept. 8 at the Adler Planetarium.

As an homage to the ball, Hermès designed a 2012 Astrologie Nouvelle scarf, which was available for guests to purchase during the cocktail party and will be carried in the company’s fall line. Inspired by an engraving from a Renaissance astrological chart, the design hints at the ingenious system used to indicate the paths of the moon and sun. A percentage of the sales proceeds from the party will benefit the Adler Planetarium.

The theme for the 2012 Celestial Ball is the Milky Way. The black-tie gala will begin with a cocktail reception followed by dinner and an auction featuring unique items and collectibles that focus on astronomy and space.

The Celestial Ball annually raises more than $1 million for the Adler Planetarium’s education programs. Proceeds from the 2012 Celestial Ball will provide essential support for the Adler’s initiatives to improve science literacy and education in the community, especially among young people and minorities.
