An infusion of federal dollars received recently by DuPage County will soon go to work helping people find work.

Members of the county’s economic development committee accepted and passed along for County Board approval $403,672 in grant funds that had been held up at the state level, awaiting clarification.

The funds are used to provide vouchers that enable unemployed residents the opportunity to attend school, receive job training, prepare for certification or other endeavors aimed at employment.

Committee member and veterans advocate Dirk Enger wanted assurance that efforts are made to have some of the money help former military members, whose unemployment numbers are more than three times those of the general population.

“I don’t think that the veteran population knows that (benefit) is out there,” Enger said.

He suggested that local chambers of commerce be advised of the assistance. Sue Clark, the county’s workforce development director, agreed the idea makes sense.
