As a Hinsdale Central senior who is in her fourth year as a cheerleader and captain of the current varsity cheerleading squad, it’s not surprising to hear Megan Vranicar talk about the importance of school spirit.

And if Friday’s all-school Pack-the-Place pep assembly in the Central gym was any indication, Vranicar’s attitude about school spirit is pretty typical among students.

“I just like the spirit of everyone cheering, promoting our school and having a sense of group,” Vranicar said. “I love being involved in the school.”

The students who filled the Central gym for the pep assembly responded very positively to the 25-minute program, which included performances by the cheerleaders, poms squad and a group of student breakdancers along with Assistant Principal Bill Wash kissing a fish for charity and a contest to see which class level could cheer the loudest. The senior class edged out the juniors as the loudest-cheering group.

“School spirit is fun,” said junior Maggie Morrone. “I like to be in the competition. I think school spirit is good for the school.”

Morrone’s friend, junior Nia Pasquini agreed.

“It is fun, and school spirit is absolutely important because it brings the school together,” Pasquini said.

Central Principal Mike McGrory said having an atmosphere promoting school spirit is important for students.

“It allows students to feel they are part of something and be connected to it,” he said. “The pep assembly is something that brings the whole school community together and unifies it. Unity is important in a big school like ours, and it’s great to see so many students wanting to be a part of it.”

Freshman Michael Zubi said he puts himself “in the middle,” regarding his level of school spirit.

“I do think it is important because it keeps people motivated,” he said. “It makes them happy to be here.”
