Among recent business, Lyons Township High School Board members:

Reviewed a school climate survey of students, parents and staff administered in October and January, which found high levels of approval for many school practices. Results suggested the need for improvement in communication efforts, individualized instruction and reducing the level of stress associated with academics.

Welcomed Western Springs junior Alexandra Blaze as the student representative to the board for 2012-2013, replacing Western Springs senior Alivia Sabatino, who graduates on June 3.

Heard a report from the LT Citizens Advisory Council on various learning opportunities, including the school’s radio and TV stations, as well as suggestions for additional courses. Woodworking, gardening and American sign language were suggested as additions to adult continuing education course offerings.

Reviewed a list of books for summer reading for students in honors, accelerated and prep-level classes. Four books are required reading and 25 books are offered as choices in five categories, including graphic novels, young adult, non-fiction, best sellers and classics.
