Burr Ridge approves backyard fowl

BURR RIDGE — The Burr Ridge Village Board unanimously approved an ordinance Monday that allows residents to raise chickens in backyard coops.

The new law allows owners of properties larger than 1 acre to own as many as four chickens for personal use. Coops must be enclosed and kept in the back yard, no closer than 10 feet from the rear lot line. No roosters are allowed.

The question of whether to allow chickens on properties smaller than 5 acres was raised by resident Chris Herringshaw, who would like to raise hens in his Steepleside Drive yard. Chickens were previously allowed only on properties of 5 acres or more.
