Second annual Hinsdale South tourney a hit

DARIEN — Faculty sponsor Nijole Nichols said Saturday’s second annual ping-pong tournament at Hinsdale South High School was a rousing success. The tournament attracted nearly twice as many participants as the inaugural event a year ago, with 36 players competing in singles and doubles.
Parents, sibling and even grandparents came out to cheer on their favorite players, some of whom came from as far as Rosemont to get in on the competition.
The drive to Darien was well worth it for Brian Brzycki of Rosemont. He not only won the $500 prize for first place in the singles competition, he and sister Catherine also won the doubles tournament, worth another $500.
Cash prizes and trophies were donated by club sponsor Wilson and Wilson Law Offices of La Grange. Anne Rabuck and William Wilson of Wilson and Wilson served as referees.
The South ping-pong club has seen a lot of growth since it was started two years ago, said Nichols. She said ping-pong, which is called table tennis by more serious players, is a great way for students to socialize and stay active.
