WESTERN SPRINGS — More than 600 gifts are on their way to those in need, thanks to some local students.

All the students at St. John of the Cross Parish School got together last week to individually wrap gifts of winter hats, gloves, scarves, socks and art supplies.

Each student prepares one gift, which includes a hand-made card and a few pieces of holiday candy.

“It is quite a wonderful event when all 649 students come together to help others,” said Jennifer Miller, director of advancement at the school.

Parishes receiving gifts from this year’s service project include St. Thaddeus, St. Barbara’s, St. Thomas of Canterbury, Our Lady of Charity, St. Mark’s, Kolbe House, Little Brothers/Friends of the Elderly and Blessed Sacrament.

Each grade is typically assigned one parish, so each parish receives between 60 and 80 gifts for their members in need.
