Soldier returns to Burr Ridge

BURR RIDGE — The Burr Ridge Police Department welcomed back one of its own Monday when officer Brian Gutierrez returned to duty after a six-month deployment in Afghanistan.
Gutierrez, a staff sergeant with the Illinois Army National Guard, was officially welcomed back at the Burr Ridge Village Board meeting Monday, and board members passed a proclamation honoring him for his two tours of duty. He also served in Iraq in 2003.
“He surprised us and came back early,” said Police Chief John Madden, who didn’t expect Gutierrez to return to the force until fall.
He said there are care packages in his office, waiting to be mailed out to Afghanistan.
The six-year veteran of the Burr Ridge Police Department was deployed in August and was expected to spend a year leading a group of 12 soldiers in Afghanistan.
Gutierrez returns not only to his spot on the Burr Ridge police force, but to his wife and young daughter.
