Relay for Life organizers at Lyons Township High School are gaining on their $1 million goal to cap a decade of fund raising to fight cancer and find a cure.
Students raised $7,200 from items donated for the group’s annual garage sale Jan. 13 and 14 at the south campus in Western Springs, said Kris Costopoulos, the group’s adviser and a two-time cancer survivor.
“Our numbers were down from years past,” Costopoulos said. “It wasn’t what we were hoping for, but it’s still a good amount of money.”
In September, the LT organization announced an ambitious goal of $1 million, having raised $820,000 to date. Leaders hope to raise $100,000 June 9 and 10, when students will camp out overnight at Bennet Field at the south campus and take turns walking the track for money pledged for the effort.
The group plans to raise the remaining $80,000 through a combination of events, including a dance marathon in March, Bark in the Park, a mini-canine relay in April at West Field, where soccer is played west of the north campus in La Grange, and a craft fair at the Corral at the south campus in May.
Anyone interested in making a donation can make checks payable to LTHS and in the memo section write Relay for Life. Donations should be sent to Assistant Principal Kris Costopoulos at LTHS South Campus, 4900 S. Willow Springs Road, Western Springs IL 60558.
Contributions are also accepted online at www.cancer.org. Find the sign-up or donation box on the left, enter the ZIP code 60525, and scroll to the 2012 LT Relay for Life June 9th event.
